This chess set began as a Christmas gift for my father, combining two things that have always been meaningful in our family. He taught me how to play chess, and my parents have long collected nutcrackers. Bringing those two traditions together became the inspiration for the project.

The original gift consisted of the custom-designed chess pieces, with each traditional chess piece reimagined in a unique nutcracker style. Then for a future Christmas, I expanded the project by designing a complete set to accompany the pieces. This included a chessboard that separates into four quarters for compact storage, custom-fitted boxes to securely house each piece, and a storage system that packages all of the components into a cohesive, portable presentation.

Design acknowledgment: The storage box & board construction was inspired by the references shown below, but all decorative nutcracker artwork was created from scratch. The final board and storage system were extensively redesigned and customized to fit the unique chess pieces and overall presentation.
